Bengaluru good news: Silk Board Junction to get elevated walkway, first in city’s metro network

New Delhi: In good news for people in Bengaluru, the Silk Board Junction is going to get an elevated walkway that will connect its Yellow and Blue Line Metro stations. Notably, the junction is located at the intersection of Hosur Road and Outer Ring Road, and is known for its bottleneck traffic congestion as it is one of the busiest intersections in India.

The cost and length of walkway

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) on Sunday floated a tender for the walkway’s civil and finishing works and total estimated cost is around Rs 59 crore. The walkway will have a travelator, the city’s first in a metro network. Nowadays, travelators can be seen at airports, and the pedestrian platform helps to transport people in transit hubs. The length of the walkway will be around 250 metres and it will connect the metro station in the Yellow Line that connects Bommasandra to RV Road with the upcoming Blue Line.

Silk Board upgraded

Silk Board, unlike other interchange stations in Bengaluru like Majestic, Rashtreeya Vidyalaya Road, and MG Road, lacks a direct transition between lines and the walkway is being constructed. The upcoming station on the Blue Line will be completed in December 2026 and it stretch to Kempegowda International Airport, the city’s main airport in 2027.

According to a report by the Times of India, land acquisition is currently underway, and the eligible bidder will be selected in one or two months after the bidding period ends. The works would probably be done in nine months from when the contract is awarded. Meanwhile, government buildings in Bengaluru have emerged among the city’s biggest service charge defaulters, with total pending dues of nearly Rs 472.7 crore, according to data shared by civic authorities.
