Stokes Joins Adelaide Strikers for Upcoming BBL Season
Tim Paine, the head coach of Adelaide Strikers, has indicated that Ben Stokes, the former England captain, will likely take on the role of opening batter for the team in the forthcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season.
The Strikers recently confirmed Stokes’ signing, marking his return to the league after retiring from international cricket. He will be available for the entire 2026-27 BBL season and is the first international player to join under the new contracting framework established last week.
The BBL 2026-27 season is set to kick off on December 12, featuring a match between Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers in Chennai. The regular season will wrap up on January 17, followed by the finals scheduled from January 19 to January 26.
Paine Discusses Stokes’ Role
In a recent press conference, Paine expressed that Stokes adds significant versatility to the team, particularly suited for the fast and bouncy pitches in Australia. He stated, “Stokes provides us with a lot of options. My initial discussions about his role suggest he will likely open the batting. I believe he is ideally suited for this position in the Big Bash. The Australian wickets will complement his style of play.”
Paine reflected on Stokes’ ability to dominate in Test cricket, noting, “I have witnessed his explosive innings firsthand, where he can dismantle any field setup. His capacity to play all around the wicket, combined with his power and class, makes him a formidable player.”
Stokes’ T20 Experience
Although Stokes has only opened in 16 of his 148 T20 innings, he boasts impressive statistics in that role, with an average of 36.53 and a strike rate of 138.48. Notably, he scored one of his two T20 centuries as an opener, achieving an unbeaten 107 for Rajasthan Royals in the 2020 IPL. Most of his T20 appearances have been in the middle order.
His last T20 match was in 2024 during The Hundred, where he managed just four runs across three innings. Paine remains confident in Stokes’ potential, stating, “I believe he can excel as an opening batter. He has the ability to switch gears and possesses remarkable power. His batting skills and proficiency against spin make him a well-rounded, world-class player. We think this role is the best fit for both him and the team.”
Paine Highlights Stokes’ All-Round Skills
Paine also praised Stokes’ bowling capabilities, suggesting he could surprise opponents with his pace and swing. “He is quicker than many realize and possesses excellent skill. He can swing the ball both ways, and we believe he can contribute significantly with the ball as well. His athleticism will also enhance our fielding performance,” he added.
Stokes’ Impact Beyond the Field
The addition of Stokes is expected to elevate fan engagement and excitement around the BBL. Paine remarked, “His personality and playing style attract a lot of attention. The announcement of his signing has already generated significant interest in the Big Bash, and I anticipate this will only grow once he arrives in Adelaide and starts performing well.”
Paine emphasized the strategic decision to pursue Stokes, noting, “We have been refining our list strategy for two years, and just two weeks ago, we learned we could sign overseas players freely. Stokes ticks all the boxes in terms of leadership, presence, and commercial appeal, making him a unique asset at a high level of cricket.”
Stokes’ Impressive Career Stats
Throughout his international career, Stokes has accumulated over 11,000 runs, including a remarkable 258 in Test matches and 182 in One Day Internationals, along with 19 international centuries. In the IPL, he has recorded two T20 centuries, including an unbeaten 107 off 60 balls for Rajasthan Royals in 2020 and 103 off 63 balls for Rising Pune Supergiant in 2017. He has also taken 352 international wickets, with a career-best performance of 6/22.
Regarded as one of the most impactful cricketers of his generation, the 35-year-old has built a distinguished career over 15 years, known for his ability to deliver match-winning performances on the biggest stages. His unforgettable 84 runs in the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup Final against New Zealand played a crucial role in securing England’s first ODI World Cup title.
