BEL joins RRP to boost India’s semiconductor and defence tech push

New Delhi: India’s push to build its own semiconductor and defence tech stack just got another boost. This time, it comes from a partnership between a government-backed giant and a private tech group. I have been tracking these deals for a while, and honestly, this one feels like it is aimed at filling real gaps.

Bharat Electronics Limited, a Navratna PSU, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with RRP Group companies to work on semiconductors, unmanned systems, and electro-optics. The focus is clear. Build more in India, rely less on imports, and create systems that can be used both locally and globally.

BEL and RRP team up for semiconductor and defence tech

The partnership brings together different strengths. BEL has long experience in defence electronics and mission systems. RRP Electronics brings semiconductor manufacturing expertise, and RRP Defense adds capabilities in electro-optics and UAV platforms.

Together, they plan to design and develop technologies like surveillance systems, weapon sights, semiconductor devices, and next-generation unmanned systems.

What this means for India’s Tech and Defence push

This move fits into a larger trend. India is trying to reduce dependence on foreign tech, especially in sensitive sectors like defence and chips.

The companies say they will:

  • Work jointly on design and development of key systems
  • Focus on high-precision electro-optics and semiconductor devices
  • Explore export opportunities under defence policies

Manoj Jain, CMD of BEL, said, “This MoU marks a significant step in our journey towards strengthening Indian defence ecosystem. By combining BEL’s expertise in defence electronics with RRP’s capabilities in semiconductor manufacturing, Electro-Optics and UAV platforms we are confident of delivering cutting-edge, indigenous solutions that will serve both national and global requirements.”

RRP Group’s Rajendra Chodankar added, “This partnership with BEL marks a forward-looking advancement in our journey to strengthen India’s defence technological base. Through collaboration with BEL that has long defined excellence in defence electronics, we will accelerate our intent to advance India’s defence ecosystem through work that is purposeful, dependable, and aligned with the nation’s long-term interests.”
