Recently, on May 6, a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) has been signed between India and Britain. Under this agreement, India has reduced the tax on beer coming from Britain from 150 percent to 75 percent. This means that British beer brands will now be available at cheaper prices. The beer which was earlier available for Rs 200, can now be available for just Rs 50. Additionally, India’s beer market is expected to reach around Rs 50,000 crore by 2024, and its popularity is likely to grow further due to changing lifestyle and social culture.

The highest consumption of beer in India occurs in southern states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Additionally, Goa is a major beer hub because of its open liquor laws and tourists. Even in North India, beer consumption is good in cities like Delhi and Chandigarh.

Under the FTA agreement, not only beer but also the import duty on Britain’s Scotch whiskey has been reduced from 150% to 75%. Also, this agreement will further strengthen the trade relations between India and Britain.
