BCCI extends Ajit Agarkar’s contract as chief selector – Report

New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to extend chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s contract till June 2026, reports The Indian Express. India ended the ICC trophy drought in Agarkar’s tenure as chief selector, which started in June 2023.

The Men in Blue won the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the Champions Trophy in the UAE in 2025. Team India also reached in the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup at home, apart from a smooth transition of the Test side.

According to the report, his contract was renewed before the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. A BCCI official told The Indian Express that the Indian team had won titles and had seen a transition in the Test and T20I sides during his tenure, and the board had extended his contract till June 2026, and Agarkar had accepted the offer a few months back.

Under Agarkar, Team India oversaw a tough phase which saw the retirements of three star players, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravi Ashwin. The off-spinner has retired from all formats, while Rohit and Virat will only play ODI cricket. The selection committee also picked two new captains, Shubman Gill in Tests and Suryakumar Yadav in T20Is.

S Sharath unlikely to continue

The senior selection committee is expected to see some changes after the annual general body meeting in September. Currently, it comprises five selectors: Agarkar, SS Das, Subroto Banerjee, Ajay Ratra and S Sharath.

According to the report, S Sharth is likely to be replaced with a new member in the committee. He served as the junior selection committee chairman in September 2021 and was promoted to the senior selection committee in January 2023.

Sharath will complete four years as selector, and the board has decided to call for fresh applications. It is also unclear whether the BCCI will retain Das and Banerjee, but the board is happy with the current selectors, and only one potential change is expected in the panel.
