BCCI asks KKR to release Mustafizur Rahman from squad amid political controversy over his signing in IPL 2026

New Delhi: In a major development ahead of IPL 2026, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India has directed Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their squad.

While the BCCI had earlier adopted a “wait and watch “poilcy, Saikia said the call was made in view of “recent developments all across.” The remark is seen as a reference to the worsening diplomatic climate and reports of civil unrest in Bangladesh, which have triggered widespread protests in India

“Due to the recent developments that are going on all across, BCCI has instructed the franchise KKR to release one of their players, Mustafizur Rahman of Bangladesh, from their squad,” Saikia said

The 30-year-old pacer found himself at the centre of controversy after KKR picked him up for a massive Rs 9.20 crore at the December auction, making him the most expensive Bangladeshi player in the league’s history.

Losing him so close to the start of the season creates a major void in the bowling lineup. KKR will heavily rely on on Matheesha Pathirana to handle the death overs on his own.

KKR’s overseas combination has also been disrupted. The franchise had likely intended to manage their foreign player slots around a core of Sunil Narine, Cameron Green, and Pathirana, with Mustafizur expected to lead the bowling attack.

Saikia also said if KKR request a replacement, the borad will permit them to make the change.
