Melbourne Renegades have landed a significant coup ahead of the Big Bash League’s 16th season, announcing the signing of England’s Ashes antagonist, Jonny Bairstow.

The charismatic wicketkeeper-batter, 37, will don the red colours for BBL|16, his first full foray into Australia’s premier T20 tournament. The announcement comes as a major boost for the Renegades, who are eager to bolster their squad with a player of Bairstow’s calibre and experience.

Jonny Bairstow’s Maiden BBL Stint

While Bairstow has toured Australia on three Ashes campaigns (2013-14, 2017-18, and 2021-22) and previously signed with the Melbourne Stars for BBL|10 in 2020 (before being recalled to England’s Test squad), this upcoming season will be his first actual competitive stint in the Big Bash. The right-hander has played T20 cricket extensively around the globe, including in the Indian Premier League, South Africa, and Pakistan, showcasing his adaptability across various conditions.

Renegades Head Coach Luke Ronchi expressed his delight at the acquisition. “Jonny has been one of the most damaging white-ball batters in world cricket for a long period of time and we’re delighted to have him joining us,” Ronchi stated. “He’s played 100 Test matches, won World Cups and performed in some of the biggest games and competitions around the world. That experience is incredibly valuable to our group.” Ronchi also highlighted Bairstow’s aggressive approach, noting, “He plays the game in a way that we want to play. He’s aggressive, he puts pressure back on the opposition and he’s capable of changing a game very quickly.”

The Ashes ‘Villain’ Ready for Australian Crowds

Known for his combative style and his role in heated Ashes battles, particularly the controversial stumping incident involving Alex Carey in 2023, Bairstow anticipates a lively reception from Australian fans. Speaking to cricket.com.au, Bairstow acknowledged the past but looked forward to the future. “That was (three) years ago now, there’s a lot of water that’s passed under the bridge,” he said, adding, “I’m sure it will be taken in the right way.” He also commented to News Corp that the reception would “probably be quite fun at times.” Bairstow’s connection to Victorian cricket, through former teammates and coaches, was instrumental in his decision to join the Renegades.

Bairstow, born on September 26, 1989, turns 37 this month and brings an impressive international record, including 3,868 runs from 107 ODIs with 11 centuries, and 1,671 runs from 80 T20 Internationals. His reported deal with the Renegades is worth more than $400,000 for the season.
