Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena set to host Champions League final in 2028

New Delhi: Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena is set to host the UEFA Champions League (UCL) final in 2028, while Wembley Stadium and Barcelona’s Camp Nou are competing for staging the 2029 final of the tournament.

UEFA confirmed the list of interested bidders from among its member associations, suggesting that the UCL final in New York will not happen until at least 2030.

Munich was the sole bidder for the 2028 final, and it also hosted the last season’s final, while Wembley staged the final in 2024. Barcelona last hosted the UCL final in 1999, when Manchester United stunned Bayern Munich with two goals in stoppage time.

After the schedule renovation, Camp Nou’s capacity will increase to 105,000, which is the largest in Europe. The UEFA executive committee is set to decide on hosts for all club competitions’ finals in 2028 and 2029 in next September.

The 2026 Champions League final will be played at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, with a new early evening start time in Europe, while the 2027 final is at Atletico Madrid’s stadium.

Europa League bidders Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, who were part of the failed Super League project in 2021, are looking to host future European finals, as was Juventus.

The Italian soccer federation proposed the 41,000-seater Juventus Stadium to host a final of the Europa League or the Conference League. The stadium hosted the Europa League final in 2014, when Juventus were eliminated in the semifinals.

Romania’s National Stadium in Bucharest is competing to host the European finals. The French soccer federation is also in the race, but has not decided on the venue between Parc des Princes in Paris and Lyon’s home stadium.

Women’s Champions League final

Lyon’s home stadium is also competing for the Women’s Champions League final in either year. The venue has previously hosted the 2019 Women’s World Cup final, which was won by the USA.

The competition for the 2028 final includes the home stadiums of Athletic Bilbao and Galatasaray in Istanbul. The 2029 list includes Ireland’s national soccer stadium in Dublin, which hosted the men’s Champions League final in 2017.
