Sunny Deol came up with yet another partition drama ahead of Independence Day 2026. His latest film, Batwara 1947 has finally been released this Friday (August 14) in theatres. The buzz around the film was huge, as it marked Sunny and Aamir Khan’s first collaboration. Preity Zinta also made her comeback in Bollywood with this Rajkumar Santoshi-directed film. Batwara 1947 clashed with Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2 at the box office. Hence, the Sunny Deol starrer took a slow start on its opening day. It seems the film faced a tough competition from the Emraan Hashmi starrer.

According to early estimates reported by Sacnilk, Sunny Deol’s minted Rs 5.75 crore on its opening day. It clearly shows that the film lagged behind Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2, which earned Rs 21 crore on day 1. The Aamir Khan-produced film received mixed to positive responses from the masses and critics. Owing to word of mouth, the partition drama managed to earn decent numbers.
Batwara 1947 ran in theatres on Friday with 14 per cent occupancy. On the other hand, Emraan Hashmi’s ran in theatres with 43 per cent occupancy. For the unversed, the Vishesh Bhatt-produced film received a solid response from the masses after the makers started the advance bookings for it.

Due to ’s fan following and the cult status of the prequel, the fans showered love on Awarapan 2 on its opening day. Coming back to Batwara 1947, the partition drama is expected to see the growth on August 15 due to the national holiday.
Sunny Deol has a strong fan following in the northern sectors of India. Hence, the numbers could increase on Saturday and Sunday. On the other hand, Awarapan 2 will also give tough competition to Batwara 1947.

Batwara 1947 has been directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. The film also stars Ali Fazal, Karan Deol, Kanikka Kapur, Abhimanyu Singh, Khushi Hajare, Isha Sandhir, Khalid Siddiqui, Rukhsar Rehman and Shabana Azmi in key roles. It is based on Asghar Wajahat’s drama, Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai. The film is set in Lahore against the backdrop of the 1947 partition of India and the division of Pakistan.
