Baththa glimpse: Vijay Sethupathi plays a ruthless ruffian as crime, fear and family drama collide in new Tamil film

The wait around Vijay Sethupathi’s upcoming Tamil film ‘Baththa’ has just become a little more interesting. The makers have released a new glimpse video titled ‘The World of Baththa’.

Directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan, the film stars Vijay Sethupathi and Lijomol Jose in the lead roles. The glimpse gives away little about the full story but makes one thing clear: Baththa is a man people fear, and he does not appear to fear anyone.

A man everyone is waiting for

The video opens with people close to Baththa waiting for him to return. The setting appears to be the 1980s, giving the film a period backdrop.

Baththa’s daughter says that she is scared and wants her father to come back. His brother, however, appears confident that Baththa will return.

A young boy then sums up the character in a simple line: “Everybody is scared of him but he isn’t scared of anything.”

The glimpse also hints that Baththa’s return could be connected to something much bigger. There is talk of a major crime taking place, while the police begin questioning people and asking if anyone suspects someone.

Vijay Sethupathi in Baththa looks far from gentle

Vijay Sethupathi’s character is shown as a rough and aggressive man who gets into physical fights and repeatedly beats people. The scenes establish him as someone who is not easily intimidated.

His behaviour at home also suggests that his relationship with his wife is far from warm. In one scene, Baththa spits out the food served by his wife, played by Lijomol Jose.

Another exchange gives a sharper idea of his attitude. His wife asks where he had been and tells him that they had been searching for him.

Baththa responds with an arrogant line: “You shouldn’t search for me. I will be found by myself.”

The glimpse therefore presents him not just as a feared figure outside his home, but also as a difficult husband inside it.

Balaji Tharaneetharan directs the film

‘Baththa’ has been written and directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan, who is known for the 2013 Tamil film ‘Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom’. The upcoming film is presented by director Atlee.

Alongside Vijay Sethupathi and Lijomol Jose, the film’s story appears to revolve around Baththa and the fear surrounding his name. The newly released glimpse focuses heavily on his personality and the reaction of people around him.

Vijay Sethupathi shared the glimpse on X, inviting viewers to experience the ‘World of Baththa’. His post also confirmed that the film has music by Sai Abhyankkar.
