Baramati bypolls: Sunetra Pawar to win unopposed as Congress withdraws candidate

New Delhi: Sunetra Pawar, wife of late NCP leader and Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, is set to win the Baramati bypolls unopposed after the Congress withdrew its candidate. The bypolls to the seat are set to be held on April 23. The seat fell vacant after Ajit Pawar’s sudden death in a plane crash in January this year.

Earlier, Congress had pitted Akash More against Sunetra Pawar. The party decided to withdraw its candidate after several requests by Nationalist Congress Party leaders, including Supriya Sule. Sule urged the Congress to consider withdrawing its candidate from the seat, saying that an unopposed election in Baramati will serve as a “dignified tribute” to Ajit Pawar’s political legacy.

In a post on X, Sule wrote today, “Following the untimely demise of Ajit Pawar, the Baramati Assembly constituency now faces a by-election. Ajit Dada’s political journey began with the Congress party, and he maintained a long-standing, respectful association with it throughout his career.”

“In this moment of grief and remembrance, an unopposed election in Baramati would serve as a dignified and heartfelt tribute to his legacy of public service and inclusive politics. I sincerely appeal to the Congress leadership to consider this gesture in the spirit of respect, unity.”
