Nowadays, most people use bank lockers to keep their important documents, jewelery and valuables safe. Locker is considered to be the safest option, but if its key gets lost somewhere then it is natural to feel nervous. The good thing is that banks and RBI have clear rules for such situations. This means that even after losing the key, your locker remains safe and can be opened as per the prescribed procedure.
Every bank locker opens with two different keys. One key remains with the customer, while the other master key is with the bank. The locker cannot open without both the keys. The thing to note is that no duplicate copy of the customer’s key is ready with the bank. For this reason, if your key is lost, it is not possible to replace it directly, rather a certain procedure has to be followed.
What is the first step to take if you lose your keys?
As soon as you feel that the locker key has been lost, immediately inform your bank branch in writing. Delay may increase unnecessary problems. The bank may take an application and undertaking from you in which you will give information about the loss of the key. In many cases, the bank may also ask for a copy of the FIR, so that the records remain safe and there is no risk.
How will the locker reopen?
Once you inform the bank, the bank starts its internal process. Generally an authorized person is called to break the locker or change its lock. This work is done in your presence and under the supervision of bank officials. The entire process is done in a safe environment, so that there is no damage to your goods. The customer has to bear the cost of changing the lock of the locker or issuing a new key. This amount may vary from bank to bank. Generally it can cost up to a few thousand rupees. The process may take about 10 to 15 days or more to complete.
Will your belongings be safe?
The most important question is whether the goods kept inside the locker are safe. The answer is yes. Because without both the keys the locker does not open and the entire system is under the surveillance of the bank. Therefore, losing the key is certainly inconvenient, but it does not affect the safety of your valuables.
