Nishin, September 17 (Daily Kiran) : Bangladesh has secured a spot in the semifinals of the women’s cricket competition at the 2026 . The quarterfinal match against China, scheduled for Thursday at the Korogi Sports Park, was called off without a ball being bowled due to rain.
Although the rain stopped shortly after it began, the persistent moisture on the outfield rendered it unplayable. Officials determined that the field was not suitable for play during their inspection, leading to the cancellation of the match without even a coin toss.
As a result of their higher ranking in the ICC standings, Bangladesh advanced to the semifinals. The team is currently ranked 10th in the ICC T20 women’s rankings, while China sits at 36th.
Bangladesh is set to face the winner of the quarterfinal match between defending champion India and host nation Japan on September 20.
India, which won the gold medal in women’s cricket at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, along with Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, qualified directly for the knockout stage. Host Japan also secured a place in the quarterfinals without needing to compete. Malaysia, Thailand, and China earned their spots in the final eight through the qualifying tournament.
In the other quarterfinals, Sri Lanka will take on Malaysia, while Pakistan will face Thailand. The winners of these matches will compete in the second semifinal.
Cricket is featured in the Asian Games for the fourth time, having previously been included in Guangzhou 2010, Incheon 2014, and Hangzhou 2023. India won gold medals in both men’s and women’s categories in Hangzhou.
