New York: 36-year-old Didarul Islam, a New York Police Department (NYPD) officer, was among the five people killed in a mass shooting at a Midtown Manhattan office tower on Monday evening local time. Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh, is being hailed as a hero for his bravery during the attack. He is survived by his wife and two sons, and according to local reports, his wife is eight months pregnant with their third child.
Mayor and NYPD pay tribute
New York City Mayor Eric Adams praised Islam’s dedication and faith, describing him as “a person who loved this city and lived a godly life”. Speaking at a press conference, Adams said, “He embodied what New York is all about — not just in his uniform, but in his spirit and love for the city. He was a true-blue New Yorker.”
The mayor also met with Islam’s grieving family, telling them, “He was a hero, and we admire him for his courage.”
‘A great loss to the force’
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Islam had served for three and a half years and was posted at the 47th Precinct in the Bronx. “He represented the very best of the NYPD,” said the force in a statement. “He died protecting others. We will honour his legacy always.”
Gunman’s motive unknown
The shooter, identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura from Las Vegas, died by self-inflicted wounds after the attack. Police said Tamura entered the 345 Park Avenue building around 6:40pm, armed with an AR-style rifle. After firing in the lobby, he moved to the upper floors, where more gunfire ensued.
Three other people, including two women, were also killed. Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the attack.
