Birmingham: Pakistan captain Babar Azam has hinted at a major review of the team’s Test setup after England completed a 3-0 series whitewash with an eight-wicket victory at Edgbaston.
Babar said Pakistan’s management and selectors would sit down to assess the team’s mistakes, discuss player combinations and decide on the best possible playing XI for upcoming assignments. His comments came after Pakistan once again struggled to compete consistently against England in the three-Test series.
Babar predicts meeting with manager and selector
Speaking after the defeat, Babar indicated that important discussions would follow the disappointing series.
“I think we need to sit down and reflect on our mistakes, decide what type of playing eleven, and decide our players,” he said.
The Pakistan captain added that the team manager and selector were expected to be involved in the discussions before a decision was made on the best XI.
The comments are significant because Pakistan made several changes during the England series, particularly after losing the first two Tests. The team struggled with English conditions and failed to find a settled combination.
Pakistan show fight in final Test
Pakistan’s batting was considerably stronger in the third Test at Edgbaston, although it was not enough to prevent another defeat.
After being bowled out for under 200 in both innings of the opening two Tests, Pakistan responded with 449 in their second innings in Birmingham.
Shan Masood led the batting effort with 95, while Babar Azam contributed 76 and opener Azam Awais scored 59.
The biggest positive for Pakistan was debutant Razaullah, who produced an impressive all-round performance. He smashed 81 off just 63 balls, including nine sixes, after claiming four wickets in England’s first innings.
Babar praised the youngster and backed him as an important prospect for Pakistan.
“I think he’s good for us. The way he played this match and he’s giving confidence,” Babar said.
England recover after early scare
Pakistan gave themselves a brief chance of pulling off an unlikely victory when Mohammad Abbas removed two England batters in the opening over of the chase.
England were chasing 130 for victory, but Joe Root and Jordan Cox quickly took control.
Root remained unbeaten on 62, while Cox scored an unbeaten 59. The pair added an unbeaten 128-run partnership to guide England to victory with eight wickets in hand.
The result completed England’s 3-0 series sweep and underlined Pakistan’s difficulties throughout the tour.
Babar admits Pakistan made changes
The Pakistan captain acknowledged that the team had to make several changes during the series after the first two defeats.
He explained that Pakistan had considered different combinations before travelling to England but were forced to reassess their plans after encountering difficult conditions.
“Before we come here, we think about different things, and then we decide our team. And then unfortunately, we have a couple of changes after losing two matches,” Babar said.
He also stressed that teams need to adapt their approach according to conditions and opponents.
“When you’re coming to different series, you try to do your best, and you decide what type of cricket to play in different conditions,” he said.
Pakistan face difficult questions
The 3-0 defeat leaves Pakistan with several questions to answer, particularly regarding selection, batting combinations and the development of younger players.
Pakistan’s inability to build a settled XI became increasingly evident as the series progressed. The team’s management will now have to determine which players can form the core of the Test side and which combinations can deliver better results in different conditions.
The emergence of Razaullah could provide one positive from the series. His performance with both bat and ball has given Pakistan another young option, while Babar stressed the importance of giving emerging players opportunities to utilise their talent.
The captain’s comments also suggest that the selection process could come under renewed scrutiny following the England whitewash.
Pakistan’s WTC position worsens
The series defeat has further damaged Pakistan’s position in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings.
Pakistan entered the final Test at the bottom of the table and their points percentage has now dropped from 16.67% to 14.81%. The team have only two wins in the current cycle and have also been docked eight points for slow over-rates.
The poor WTC position adds further pressure on Pakistan to improve their Test results and develop a more consistent side.
Major decisions expected ahead
With the England series now over, attention will turn towards the discussions Babar referred to.
The Pakistan captain’s comments indicate that the team management and selectors are expected to review the mistakes made during the tour before finalising future combinations.
For Pakistan, the immediate challenge will be to turn the lessons from England into meaningful changes. The emergence of Razaullah provides some encouragement, but the team will need greater consistency across batting, bowling and selection if it is to recover from the 3-0 defeat.
