Audi will debut RS 5 during Miami GP as hot-lap car

New Delhi: For Audi Sport’s, their first high-performance plug-in hybrid, the RS 5 marks the start of the beginning of a new era for the performance part, coming with electrifying power and great performance figures. At the Miami Grand Prix, the new Audi RS 5 will debut as part of the F1 Pirelli Hot Laps programme, which will also give selected guests a glimpse into Audi’s electrified future.

Under the bonnet, there is a 2.9-litre V6 biturbo engine with an electric motor to deliver a combined output of 639 bhp. Flat out, it will do 285 kph, but it is in the way that the power is deployed, which defines the performance. The electric motor alone can do 174bhp.

The quattro with Dynamic Torque Control, which is an electromechanical torque vectoring system that actively distributes power across the rear axle. What that does is, it helps to sharpen the turn-ins, boosts grip mid-corner and keeps the car composed when pushed hard, exactly what you want on a tight, technical circuit.

The Audi RS 5’s in the hot-lap programme won’t be coming in a stripped-out version but rather come in near-production iterations running without major modifications. Like all the other cars, the RS 5 will be driven by professional drivers. There will be two of them, each coming with their own Audi PHEV. One of the drivers is Dindo Capello, the five-time Sebring 12 Hours Champion and Markus Winkelhock, a three-time winner of the 24-Hour race at Nurburgring.

There was a little makeover given to the two RS 5s. The colour of choice is a special shade of titanium, accented by Lava Red rings on the front, back and wheel hub caps of the black trims. A racing engineer will be on the ground to keep the cars in order. The German carmaker has said it has selected Miami as the debut venue as it makes an effort to increase presence and reach in the world’s second-biggest automotive market.
