Atalanta’s coach, Gian Piero Gasperini, is optimistic about their Scudetto chances after a 4-0 victory over Juventus. This win brings them within three points of Serie A leaders Inter.
The match at the Allianz Stadium saw goals from Mateo Retegui, Marten de Roon, Davide Zappacosta, and Ademola Lookman. This result marked Juventus’ worst home defeat since October 1967.
For the first time in their history, Atalanta scored four goals against Juventus in a league game and secured a victory by at least two goals away from home. Gasperini expressed that this outcome could be a turning point for the team. “We must never stop dreaming,” he stated, emphasizing that belief can turn the impossible into reality.
Despite this triumph, Atalanta’s chances of winning their first Italian championship remain slim according to the Opta supercomputer. It gives them just a 6.3% probability of claiming the title. In contrast, Napoli has a 26.5% chance of winning their fourth Scudetto, while Inter is favoured with a 66.9% likelihood to retain the trophy.
Before facing Atalanta, Juventus had won five consecutive league matches and remained unbeaten in 21 home Serie A games since February 2024. Gasperini acknowledged the significance of this victory, calling it “sensational” given Juventus’ recent form. He noted that although they missed some opportunities, it was an almost perfect performance.
Gasperini also commended Ademola Lookman for his contribution to the team’s success. Lookman scored his 13th Serie A goal of the season shortly after resolving a public disagreement with Gasperini. The coach had previously criticised Lookman’s penalty-taking skills following Atalanta’s Champions League exit against Club Brugge.
Lookman’s Impact on Atalanta
Gasperini praised Lookman for his growth as a player and his positive impact on the team. “People may have different views,” Gasperini remarked, adding that Lookman became exceptional when he prioritised teamwork. The coach believes Lookman will eventually become Atalanta’s captain, symbolising his deep connection with the club.
As Atalanta prepares for their upcoming clash with Inter on Sunday, they aim to continue their impressive form and challenge for the top spot in Serie A. Despite past losses against Inter, Gasperini remains hopeful about their prospects this season and encourages his team to keep striving for success.
