In the year 1993, PV Narasimha Rao’s government was at the Center. Casey Lanka was the Railway Minister. Even then the meeting of the House was very long due to the railway budget. Many amendments on the Railway Budget were discussed in the Lok Sabha. Because of this, this meeting lasted for about 18 hours 24 minutes.

1997: Discussion was made for 20 hours

This is the year 1997. A three -day meeting of Parliament was held for the completion of 50 years of freedom. At that time, Indrakumar Gujral was the head of the government of the 13 -party United Front. This was then the first time that a special session of Parliament was called to discuss only one proposal.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha then. He presented this proposal. He then discussed this meeting on democracy and the situation of democratic institutions, possibilities for the situation of economic and infrastructure, possibilities and achievements in the fields of science and technology. Then this meeting lasted for 20 hours eight minutes.

1998: The meeting was also long on the railway budget

Then, long discussions and debate on many amendments and provisions of the railway budget he had presented. Due to this, this meeting was stretched very long. In 2002, there was a government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee at the center at the time of riots in Godhra, Gujarat. There was a long discussion in the Lok Sabha then. There was a debate on the proposal regarding the failure of the administration in this case. Then this discussion was started by the then SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav. He had said in his discussion that along with restoring confidence in minority communities, this House urges the government to take steps to give them security.

In response, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had said that I am accused that I criticize Islamic fundamentalism but do not criticize Hindu fundamentalism. However, the opposition’s proposal was then rejected. Then there were 182 votes in favor of the proposal, while 276 votes were cast in the opposition. Then the Lok Sabha proceedings lasted for about 17 hours and 25 minutes.

Parliament passed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill-2025 on 4 April 2025. This law has also been made with the approval of the President after passing the bill from both the Houses of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Earlier, action was taken for 15 hours 41 minutes in the Lok Sabha regarding the Waqf Bill. However, along with the Question Hour, there was also a discussion on President’s rule in Manipur, but the House only discussed the Waqf Bill for more than 12 hours. The Waqf bill was also discussed in the Rajya Sabha for more than 12 hours. Then the Rajya Sabha had made a record of constant discussion. Various issues were discussed in the upper house for a total of 17 hours 2 minutes.

The discussion started at 11 am on April 3 and ended at 4:02 am on April 4. According to Parliament records, this was the longest meeting in the Rajya Sabha. Earlier, the longest meeting of the Rajya Sabha was held on 17 September 1981.
