Singer Zubin Garg was cremated in Guwahati with full state honors. After the death of a 52 -year -old singer in Singapore, the Assam government declared a 3 -day state mourning.
Kamrup: Noted singer and musician Zubin Garg was cremated with full state honors at Kamarkuchi, the outskirts of Guwahati on Tuesday. The body of the late singer was placed in Bhogeshwar Barua Sports Complex to pay homage to his fans and well -wishers before the last rites. The Assam government announced a 3 -day state mourning after the singer’s death. Assam CMO said that there will be no official entertainment, formal program or public celebration during this period.
Zubin Garg’s sister Palme Borthhakur performed the funeral rituals. The singer’s wife Garima Saikia wept while paying a final tribute to her ‘Goldie’. Zubin was known by this name among friends and family.
Zubin was given gun salutes at the cremation ground of Kamarkuchi village in Sonapur.
Hundreds of people gathered at the crematorium to give farewell to their beloved singer. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma laid a wreath and wrote in one of his posts, “The last time I saw #belovedzubeen. From now on he will live in Assam’s soul, mind and heart …”
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju paid his last tribute to Garg at the crematorium in Kamarkuchi. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was present on the spot and was closely monitoring all the rituals along with the officials and the family members of the singer.
Assam’s 52 -year -old Icon died on Friday after an incident of drowning in Singapore. His body was brought to Delhi and later taken to Assam by a commercial flight, which landed in Guwahati on Sunday morning. Garg was in Singapore for the Northeast India Festival. This news raged a wave of mourning across the country and there was a flood of condolence messages and tributes on social media.
Known as the cultural symbol of Assam, Garg was not only a singer, but also a musician, music director, actor and filmmaker. In his career of more than three decades, he lent his voice to thousands of songs in Assamese, Hindi, Bengali and many other Indian languages. Garg was a multi-instinouslist and played 12 instruments including Anandlahri, Dhol, Dotara, Drum, Guitar, Harmonica, Harmonium, Mandolin, Keyboard, Tabla and many types of rhythm instruments.
