Assam: Immerse in devotion at Kedareswar temple during the Sawan month

New Delhi: In the holy month of Sawan, what could be a better way to immerse oneself in devotion than visiting a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva? The Kedareswar temple, located on the serene Madanchala Hill in Assam’s Hajo, is one such sacred temple. Rebuilt during the Ahom era by King Rajeswar Singha in 1753 AD, this centuries-old temple is significant for the presence of the rare self-originated phallic symbol, or Swayambhu Linga, that too in the Ardhanariswara, or androgynous shape, in the central chamber. The Swayambhu Linga is generally kept hidden in a metal bowl.

The main shrine and the newly-erected Durga Temple are adorned by two sacred ponds. A stone stair takes one through the forest to a large rock-cut image of Ganesha. Being part of the Pancha Tirtha or five sacred sites in Hajo, historically, this is one of the most important temples in India. Therefore, apart from religious pilgrimage, history and archaeology lovers also frequently visit this beautiful Shiva temple.
