New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday announced its first list of candidates for the Assam Assembly Elections. The list has names of some prominent leaders of the party, including Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is contesting from Jalukbari seat. A total of 88 names appeared in the list released by the party and it includes several turncoats, who have crossed over from the Congress.
Prominent names in first list of candidates released by BJP
Apart from CM Sarma, the BJP has fielded former leaders of the Congress, Pradyut Bordoloi and Bhupen Kumar Borah. Bordolio has been fielded from Dispur seat. He ended his longtime association with the Congress Party and joined the BJP in presence of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday.
Former Congress state president Borah who also left the party, weeks earlier was fielded in these elections. His name was in the first list of candidates of the BJP and he will be contesting the Bihpuria seat. In the last 2 elections he had lost this seat to BJP candidates. However, this time round, he is hoping to win the elections, with the BJP’s support firmly behind him.

BJP Minister, Pijush Hazarika is fielded from Jagiroad, while Rupali Langthasa is contesting the elections from Haflong. Prasanta Phukan is contesting this year’s Assembly Elections from Dibrugarh seat.
Incumbent Hitendra Nath Goswami will hope to retain his Jorhat seat from the Congress candidate, Gaurav Gogoi. Gogoi is currently an MP, but is hoping to move to state politics this year.
Congress candidate withdraws
Meanwhile, in the Congress camp, Prateek Bordoloi has withdrawn his candidature from this year’s elections. He was set to contest from the Margherita Assembly seat. The withdrawal came after his father, and former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi joined the BJP.
Explaining his withdrawal Prateek said that his continued candidacy would create confusion amongst the people of the state. It said that it will also raise questions regarding his commitment within the party rank. He wrote to party President Mallikarjun Kharge, regarding his decision to withdraw from the elections/.
Assam will vote in a single phase election on April 9. The counting of votes in the state is scheduled for May 4, 2026, the Election Commission had announced last week.
