Asrani’s Family Reveals Late Actor’s Final Wish: ‘We Didn’t Inform Anyone, It Was His Desire To Keep The Funeral Private’

Veteran actor and comedian Govardhan Asrani passed away peacefully on October 20, 2025, at the age of 84, after being hospitalised for five days at Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu, Mumbai.

Known fondly as Asrani Ji, the actor was suffering from age-related health issues. His passing marked the end of an era in Hindi cinema, as he was celebrated for his impeccable comic timing and ability to bring joy to audiences for over five decades. In keeping with his final wish, Asrani’s funeral was held privately the same evening at the Santacruz crematorium, attended only by his close family and a few friends.

According to reports, Asrani had clearly expressed his desire for a quiet farewell, away from the media glare and public attention. His wife, Manju Asrani, fulfilled this wish, ensuring the cremation was conducted with utmost privacy. Speaking to India Today, Asrani’s manager Babubhai Thiba confirmed that the family deliberately did not inform anyone about his passing, saying, “We did not inform anyone about his demise as it was his wish to keep it private.” The veteran actor wanted to be remembered as a simple man, without fanfare or publicity surrounding his final journey.

 

 

 

In the hours before his death, Asrani shared a cheerful “Happy Diwali” message on his Instagram Story, which left many fans in disbelief when the news of his passing broke later that day. Initially, some even dismissed the reports as a hoax due to his recent upbeat post. However, his family later confirmed his demise and issued an emotional statement: “Our beloved Asrani Ji, who brought smiles to countless faces, is no longer with us. His passing is an irreparable loss for both cinema and our hearts. His legacy of laughter and joy will remain eternal. Om Shanti.”

Throughout his remarkable career, Asrani appeared in more than 350 films, earning immense love for roles in classics like Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Chhoti Si Baat, Roti, and Pati Patni Aur Woh. For younger audiences, he was also a familiar face in modern comedies such as Welcome, De Dana Dan, Bodyguard, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa. Stars like Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, and Rajpal Yadav paid heartfelt tributes, remembering him as a “timeless artist” whose performances will continue to brighten screens for generations to come.
