India have advanced to the men’s cricket semi-finals at the Asian Games 2026 without playing a ball in their quarter-final against Afghanistan, with rain forcing the knockout clash in Nisshin to be abandoned.
As the higher-seeded side, India progress under the tournament’s washout rules and will now face the winner of the quarter-final between Sri Lanka and Nepal in the last-four stage.
India vs Afghanistan quarter-final abandoned
India’s quarter-final against Afghanistan was scheduled to take place at the Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin on Monday. However, persistent rain and a wet outfield prevented the match from getting underway.
With no play possible, the match was eventually abandoned before the toss.
The tournament regulations state that a washed-out knockout match is awarded to the higher-seeded team. India entered the competition as the No. 1 seed based on the ICC T20I rankings, while Afghanistan were seeded fifth.
As a result, India progressed directly to the semi-finals.
Who will India face in the Asian Games semi-final?
India’s semi-final opponent will be decided by the quarter-final between Sri Lanka and Nepal on September 29.
The winner of that match will face India in the second semi-final on October 1.
Sri Lanka entered the knockout stage directly as one of the four seeded teams, while Nepal advanced through the group stage.
If the Sri Lanka-Nepal quarter-final is also washed out, Sri Lanka will advance because of their higher seeding.

Why did India advance despite not playing?
The Asian Games men’s cricket competition uses seeding based on the ICC T20I rankings to determine which team advances when a knockout match cannot be completed.
India were the top seed entering the competition, ahead of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Afghanistan were the fifth seed.
That gave India the advantage when their quarter-final was washed out.
India’s route to the final
India will play the second semi-final on October 1 against either Sri Lanka or Nepal.
The other semi-final will feature Pakistan against the winner of Bangladesh versus Malaysia.
The two semi-final winners will then meet in the gold-medal match on October 3, while the losing teams will contest the bronze-medal match on the same day.
