New Delhi, September 16: Asian Games 2026 medallists will get a direct opportunity to qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, with the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) granting them automatic entry to the 2027 World Boxing Championships in Kazakhstan, the first qualifying event in the Olympic cycle.
The BFI has released its selection criteria for the 2027-28 period as part of a four-stage qualification pathway aimed at maximising India’s representation at the Los Angeles Olympics.
The selection policy has been framed in accordance with the qualification system developed by World Boxing and approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Under the qualification pathway, the 2027 World Boxing Championships will be followed by the Asian Qualifier in China and two World Qualifying Tournaments in 2028, to be held in Italy and Hungary.
According to the BFI’s latest circular, Asian Games 2026 medallists will be selected as the main entries in their respective weight categories. The gold medallists from the 10th Elite National Championships will serve as reserve entries in those categories.
For weight categories in which India does not win a medal at the Asian Games, the gold medallist from the 10th Elite National Championships will be selected as the main entry. The same provision will apply to Olympic weight categories that are not part of the Asian Games programme.
The policy also lays down the selection process for subsequent Olympic qualification events.
Boxers who reach the quota-bout round at the 2027 World Championships but fail to secure an Olympic quota place will receive direct entry to the Asian Qualifier in China. The remaining places will be decided through a Ranking Selection Trial involving elite national campers who have entered the National Coaching Camp through the designated pathways.
A similar procedure will be followed for the two World Qualifying Tournaments in 2028 in Italy and Hungary.
The BFI said the selection framework was designed to ensure greater clarity, fairness and transparency in the process of identifying India’s Olympic hopefuls.
“This policy has been framed to give our boxers a clear and structured route to Los Angeles 2028, built around consistent performance at the National Coaching Camp and at World Boxing’s qualification events,” BFI president Ajay Singh said.
The National Coaching Camp will initially comprise medallists from the 10th Elite National Championships, Asian Games 2026 medallists and wild-card selections made by the BFI Selection Committee, in accordance with the provisions of the policy.
For non-Olympic weight categories, the gold medallist from the 10th Elite National Championships will be the main entry for the 2027 World Championships, while the silver medallist will be the reserve.
The BFI’s four-stage pathway is intended to provide Indian boxers with multiple opportunities to earn Olympic quotas while placing greater emphasis on performances at international qualification events and within the National Coaching Camp.
With the Asian Games 2026 medallists assured of the main entry in their respective Olympic weight categories, the continental event will assume added significance for Indian boxers looking to establish an early route towards the Los Angeles Games.
