Indian weightlifter Harjinder Kaur, who earned a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026, secured ninth place in the women’s 69 kg weightlifting event at the Asian Games held in Aichi-Nagoya on Sunday.
Kaur was unable to match her previous performance in Glasgow, achieving a total lift of 204 kg, which included 94 kg in the snatch and 110 kg in the clean and jerk.
Despite being a silver medalist this year, Harjinder struggled in the snatch category, managing only a best lift of 94 kg and failing in her last two attempts at 97 kg. This was also below her personal best of 101 kg set during the Commonwealth Games.
Initially, she climbed to fourth place after her first clean and jerk attempt of 110 kg, but as other competitors performed better, she fell back to ninth place with her total lift of 204 kg.
The gold medal was claimed by North Korea’s Hyang Kuk Song with a total lift of 273 kg (121 kg in snatch and 152 kg in clean and jerk), while silver went to Wen-huei Chei from Chinese Taipei with 232 kg (106 kg in snatch and 126 kg in clean and jerk). Bahrain’s Ingrid Grueso took home the bronze with a total of 229 kg (101 kg in snatch and 128 kg in clean and jerk).
Boxing: Ankush Panghal Secures Medal
In boxing, Indian athlete Ankush Panghal has guaranteed a medal for India in the men’s 80 kg category by defeating Tajikistan’s Nekruz Salimov in the quarterfinals, winning by a unanimous decision of 5-0.

Archery: Teams Excel and Move to Semifinals
India had a successful day in archery, with both Dhiraj Bommadevara-Kumkum Mohod and Sahil Jadhav-Chikitha Taniparthi advancing to the semifinals in their respective mixed team events.
Dhiraj and Kumkum won their quarterfinal match against Vietnam 6-0 after a Round of 16 victory over the UAE. They will face Japan in the semifinals on October 2.
Sahil and Chikitha also triumphed in their quarterfinal against Kazakhstan, winning 159-154 after previously defeating Mongolia. They will compete against Thailand in the semifinals on September 30.
Additionally, India’s archers progressed to the semifinals in both the men’s and women’s compound team events, showcasing a strong performance.
Surfing: Indian Surfers Advance
In surfing, Sivaraj Babu advanced to round three of the men’s shortboard event, outperforming Iran’s Davoud Khadir with a score of 8.96. He joins fellow Indian Kishore Kumar in the next round, with all four Indian surfers in both men’s and women’s shortboard events progressing.
Earlier, Sugar Shanti Gayen and Kamali Prakash also reached the third round, with Sugar defeating Chen Wan-yu of Chinese Taipei with a score of 7.33 and Kamali overcoming Singapore’s Camille Marie Spaccarotella with 7.57.
