However, in the 10m air rifle mixed team competition, the pair of Elavenil Valarivan and Parth Mane misfired to finish in the fourth and last position while the mighty Chinese shattered two world records to pocket yet another gold.

Following a strong showing in the qualification round, where Elavenil and Parth shot a combined total of 634.6 to finish second, the anticipation rose. However, the 27-year-old Elavenil and her 18-year-old partner Parth’s sluggish start and failing to catch-up meant that the Indian duo were never in contention for the top-3 positions before being eliminated after shot 18 with a score of 376.3.

Elavenil, who spearheaded the women’s 10m rifle team to silver besides bagging individual silver on Sunday, shouldered the responsibility of leading charge on the day. Mane, too, was coming off a silver from the men’s 10m rifle team event on Monday. But both shooters were left searching for rhythm throughout the contest in which their competitors took off from the word go.

For the third day in a row at the rifle range in Aichi Prefectural General Shooting Gallery, the Chinese continued to make the loudest noise. The pair of Wang Zifei and Sheng Lihao first re-wrote the qualification world record with a score of 638.9 and later walked into the final to shoot down a second world record total of 507.1.

South Korea’s Ban Hyojin and Park Hajun took silver (502.9) and Japan’s Naoki Hanakawa and Misakia Nobata claimed the bronze (439.7).

“Elavenil did well in the qualification. But somehow, both shooters were not able to settle into their positions in the final and there shots were all over the place,” said Pooja Ghatkar, former Indian shooter and coach of the rifle team here.

“We took a timeout after series 3, which gave them some time to breathe and re-group. They started doing well after the timeout. We should have done that at the end of series 2.”
