Kolkata: The war between Iran and US-Israel combine continues to jeopardise LPG supplies and stretch the financial limits of oil marketing companies, putting families in financial strain and anxiety. In this climate of uncertainty, one can have a look at the PM Surya Ghar Yojana which paves the way for free electricity for households. The scheme is an initiative by the Centre for installing solar rooftop systems on the rooftop of common people. Solar panels will be fitted on the roof.
Objective of the scheme
The stated objective of the scheme is to install solar panels on the rooftops of 1 crore households all over the country. It also intends to provide people with up to 300 units of free electricity every month. An important collateral benefit will be to curb electricity demand, which will also rein in greenhouse gas emission through the use of thermal power. The total number of households benefitted under this scheme as on December 9, 2025 was 24,35,196. The state with the largest number of beneficiaries was Gujarat with 7,10,102 households.
Financial assistance under the scheme
The scheme entail a subsidy of 60% of the solar unit price for systems up to 2 kW capacity. If the system is rated between 2 and 3 kW, the subsidy is 40%. There is no subsidy if the unit is rated above 3 kW. This could mean Rs 30,000 subsidy for 1 kW system, Rs 60,000 for 2 kW systems and Rs 78,000 for 3 kW systems.
Eligibility criterion
There are a few eligibility criteria for application for this scheme. These are:
- Only Indian citizens can apply
- The applicant should have a house with a roof where solar panels can be installed
- The house should have a valid electricity connection
- The applicant should not have received any subsidy for solar panels

THREE: Click the drop-down menu and select ‘Consumer Login’
FOUR: Type in a consumer mobile number for registration purposes
FIVE: Do CAPTCHA compliance and click to Verify
SIX: OTP will be sent which will be used to Login
SEVEN: After logging in, details like name, email, PIN code have to be typed in; then saved
EIGHT: Consumers can then click “Apply for Solar Rooftop” or go through the vendor selection process
NINE: Consumers can select state, district and electricity distribution company/utility. They have to type in the consumer account number
