Argentina football legend Gabriel Batistuta returned to the pitch in style, scoring two goals as Fiorentina All-Stars defeated Operazione Nostalgia 7-3 in a special exhibition game.
The game took place at Fiorentina’s home ground, Stadio Artemio Franchi as the club celebrated its 100th anniversary. More than 20,000 fans attended the event to see some of Fiorentina’s biggest former stars in action.
What legacy did Batistuta leave in Florence?
Batistuta played for Fiorentina between 1991 and 2000 and scored more than 160 goals in over 260 appearances for the Italian club. He was one of the standout players on the night as the Fiorentina All-Stars produced an entertaining performance. The former Argentina striker also played alongside some famous names, including Manuel Rui Costa, Roberto Baggio and Francesco Totti. His two goals reminded fans of his best years in Florence during the 1990s. During his time at Fiorentina, Batistuta helped the club win the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana. He also played an important role when Fiorentina won the Serie B title.
Why did Batistuta choose that end of the pitch?
Batistuta revealed that he deliberately chose to attack the goal in front of the Curva Fiesole during the first half after winning the coin toss before the match. ‘I won the toss and chose to go towards that goal because I feel it’s familiar,’ Batistuta said, as quoted by Goal.com.
How did he feel about returning despite his fitness?
The Argentine admitted that he was not fully fit but said he could not turn down the chance to take part in Fiorentina’s special celebration. ‘Honestly, I am not in shape to play, but I could not miss Fiorentina’s party. I am part of these 100 years, so I wanted to be here,’ he said. Batistuta also spoke about the strong bond between him and the Fiorentina supporters. ‘I felt their love, and clearly they felt what I feel for them, so it is reciprocal, and I hope it continues,’ he added.
How did this game help ease recent disappointment?
The exhibition match provided a happy moment for Fiorentina fans, especially after the club’s official anniversary fixture on August 29 ended in disappointment. Fabio Grosso’s Fiorentina suffered a 3-0 defeat against newly promoted Frosinone in Serie A. Despite the result, the club continued its centenary celebrations with torchlight parades and large light displays across the city.
What makes the bond with Florence so unique?
Batistuta also praised the special relationship between Fiorentina and the people of Florence. He said the passion for the club in the city is something rarely seen elsewhere in the world. ‘Do not try to find explanations, you understand? Just feel it,’ Batistuta said.
