Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone 18 Pro To Get DSLR-Like Camera Control: Everything You Need To Know

Apple is reportedly planning to bring some big changes in rumoured iPhone 18 Pro models, which are expected to launch in September 2026. Apple’s next generation iPhones could take smartphone photography a big step closer to professional cameras.

According to a new leak, the Cupertino-based tech giant might introduce a variable aperture lens on the iPhone 18 Pro models.

DSLR-Style Control Coming To iPhone 18 Pro And 18 Pro Max

The information comes from the popular Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station, who claims that Apple’s 48MP Fusion camera on both iPhone 18 Pro models will feature variable aperture — a first for any iPhone. The report also revealed that the main and telephoto cameras could also come with larger apertures, allowing for better light capture and improved image quality.

In simple terms, a variable aperture system means the camera lens can physically adjust its opening size. When shooting in low light, the lens can open wider to let in more light, while in bright conditions, it can close slightly to prevent overexposure. This gives users better control over how much of the photo stays in focus. allowing them to make the subject look sharper or blur the background more, just like a professional DSLR camera.

So far, Apple’s top-end iPhones, including the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro models have used a fixed ƒ/1.78 aperture on the main camera. This means the lens opening stays the same in all lighting conditions. With a variable aperture, users will be able to control how much light enters the camera.

This isn’t the first time variable aperture has been linked to Apple. Back in late 2024, well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had predicted that the iPhone 18 Pro lineup would include the feature. It was also rumoured for the iPhone 17 series but it never made it to production.

With the iPhone 18 Pro expected to arrive in September 2026, we may still have to wait a while but if Apple does bring DSLR-style aperture control to the iPhone, it could be one of the most exciting camera upgrades yet.
