Apple-Google AI deal deepens: New Gemini powers next-gen Siri ahead of WWDC 2026

New Delhi: Apple’s artificial intelligence strategy is coming into sharper focus, with a new report shedding light on its expanding partnership with Google and how it could reshape the future of Siri. The information states that the cooperation is much broader than one had ever thought, which provides Apple with the uncharacteristic freedom to scale Google Gemini models to its ecosystem.

The report is included in the column of AI Agenda of The Information, stating that Apple can directly reach and edit Gemini in its own data centres. Such a degree of control enables Apple to customise the use of AI to its devices, a step that is indicative of a hybrid strategy, which involves the outsourcing of AI resources with the strict and tightly guarded hardware-software integration by Apple.

Deep access to Gemini enables custom AI models

According to The Information, Apple is applying a process they refer to as model distillation to generate smaller and more efficient AI systems based on Gemini. These are lightweight models that will be based on iPhones, iPads and Macs, which will eliminate the need to use cloud computing and enhance speed and privacy.

The models are distilled by Apple and can be able to achieve almost high-end performance using much less computing power because they learn not only what to produce but also how to reason like Gemini. Nevertheless, balancing the strong suit of Gemini with the long-term vision of Siri within the company is still a challenge since the company still invests in its in-house Foundation Models team.

Siri set for major transformation at WWDC

Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman released separate reports saying that Apple will roll out a radically redesigned Siri at its annual developer conference, WWDC 2026, in June. The change is expected to bring a more conversational, chatbot-like experience and a new interface.

The new design may also break off the present glowing border to a Dynamic Island-like interface, which has a pill-shaped indicator, which swells to a Liquid Glass panel to display results. Apple is also purportedly developing a standalone Siri application which will systematise previous conversations, permit attachments, and allow voice and text switching unhindered.

‘Ask Siri’ to power system-wide AI experience

The major feature of the upgrade is a new ‘Ask Siri’ option, which seeks to transform the assistant into an agent AI. Users can engage with content within apps, including summarising emails, adding events to calendars, or extracting contextual information from on-screen text.

This increased connection will enable Siri to access personal information across Apple devices to play even more proactive roles in the form of traffic-related notifications or context-related recommendations. Apple believes that this development will eventually make Siri a serious rival to AI-based applications such as Gemini and ChatGPT.

Although it has a very ambitious roadmap, the timelines are uncertain. The next-generation upgrade of Siri was first planned to be released in 2025 but has been postponed several times. It is currently believed that it will expand with iOS 27 later this year, after being announced at WWDC.

It is yet to be seen whether Apple will be able to keep up with the AI race. However, with its huge worldwide audience and more firm control over the ecosystem, the company is gambling that a highly integrated, privacy-concerned AI experience can distinguish itself.
