Anupama Parameswaran on Marriage: ‘It Will Be on My Own Terms’

While discussing her latest project, Crazy Kalyanam, actress Anupama Parameswaran is quick to distinguish between the family pressures portrayed on screen and her own life. Unlike the conflicts often explored in cinema, she says there is no pressure at home to get married or rush into a decision.

No Pressure from Family: Anupama

“My family always tells me to get married whenever I feel ready,” says the Karthikeya 2 actress. While she looks forward to experiencing motherhood someday, she believes marriage should never be treated as a milestone that must be reached on someone else’s timeline.

Working on the Telugu-language film has also given her a fresh perspective on regional wedding traditions. Comparing celebrations in Kerala and Telangana, Anupama observes that Kerala weddings have traditionally been simple and predominantly vegetarian, while her exposure to Telangana weddings introduced her to a different range of customs and festivities.

She also points out that wedding celebrations in Kerala have evolved over the years, with ceremonies such as haldi and mehendi becoming more common. Earlier generations, she notes, typically kept celebrations limited to the engagement and wedding.

On Chasing Versatility

At its heart, Crazy Kalyanam explores what partnership should mean. Anupama believes marriage should allow two people to build a happy life together rather than reduce a woman to the role of a domestic worker. “That is what my character Keerthi believes, and it is my personal opinion as well,” she says.

The Kishkindhapuri star describes Keerthi as a strict individual whose sharp personality is balanced by a supportive male lead, creating the central conflict of the narrative.

Anupama’s parents recently watched the film and responded warmly to it, connecting with its emotional core despite not knowing Telugu. Their reaction was particularly meaningful to the actor, who says she does not want to choose projects solely for financial gain.

“I do not want audiences to feel that all my films are alike,” she explains.

With a slate of projects in Tamil and Malayalam, Anupama remains focused on versatility and the opportunity to portray distinctive characters. For her, the challenge lies in continually exploring new facets of her craft rather than repeating what has worked before.
