New Beginnings with Jurgen Klopp
According to a report from Sports Bild, as cited by various sources, Rudiger’s decision may be influenced by the recent coaching changes. The 33-year-old is considering his options after Julian Nagelsmann’s departure and Jurgen Klopp’s appointment as the new head coach. It remains unclear whether Klopp intends to include Rudiger in his plans, as he aims to gradually integrate current players and assess new talent. The evaluation process has just begun, and players contemplating retirement have refrained from making any public statements regarding their international careers.
Limited Role in the World Cup
During the World Cup, Rudiger found himself as the third-choice centre-back, behind established players Jonathan Tah and Nico Schlotterbeck. Following an injury to Nico in the second group stage match against Ivory Coast, Rudiger stepped in as a starter for the final group stage match against Ecuador and the game against Paraguay, both of which ended in defeat for Germany. Since his debut in 2014, he has accumulated 86 caps for the national team.

He was part of the victorious squad in the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2017, but his record in major tournaments has been disappointing, with early exits in the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, a last-16 finish at Euro 2021, a quarter-final appearance at Euro 2024, and now a round-of-32 exit at the 2026 World Cup.
