It has been 34 years since the release of Anil Kapoor and Sridevi’s film Lamhe. Director-producer Yash Chopra had made this film with full dedication, but the film failed at the box office. Yash Chopra has become a victim of depression after the flop of the film.
Lamhe is a 1991 musical romantic drama film, which was directed and produced by Yash Chopra. The story of the film was written jointly by Honey Irani and Rahi Masoom Raza. Sridevi played the role of mother and daughter in this film. The film also featured Waheeda Rehman, Anupam Kher, Deepak Malhotra and Dippy Sagoo.
Yash Chopra is known for experiments in films. That’s why Anil Kapoor had to sacrifice his beloved mustache at that moment. Actually, in the film he had to look younger than Sridevi, so he had to do so. He had decided at that very moment that he would cast Rekha in Lamhe.
In view of the changing circumstances, Yash Chopra first made the film Chandni. The lead actress in this was Sridevi. After seeing Sridevi’s flirtatiousness and style in the film, Yash finalized to cast Sridevi in place of Rekha in Lamhe.
In the film Lamhe, it was shown that Anil Kapoor wants to marry Sridevi, but she is older than him and loves someone else. Later he dies in an accident. His daughter (Sridevi) grows up and starts loving Anil Kapoor, but he does not accept her. However, the film would have had a happy ending. The audience did not like the story. Lamhe was a flop but in 1992, Yash Chopra got the Filmfare Award for Best Film and Sridevi got the Best Actress Award. Rahi Masoom Raza received Filmfare for Best Comedian Anupam Kher, Best Story Honey Irani and Best Dialogues. The movie also won the National Film Award for Best Costume Design.
Yash Chopra had prepared the film Lamhe with a budget of Rs 2 crore. The movie flopped at the box office and collected Rs 3 crore. Most of the shooting of the film was done in Rajasthan and London.
