Actor Anil Kapoor is commemorating the 32nd anniversary of the 1994 film ‘1942: A Love Story’, directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. In an Instagram post, Kapoor described the film as close to his heart and reflected on the passion and honesty with which it was created.
“32 years later, and this film still feels as close to my heart as it did on day one. We made this film with honesty, passion and so much love. I don’t think any of us knew that decades later, it would still be remembered with the same affection,” he stated.
Kapoor expressed his pleasure at seeing the film restored in 8K resolution with remastered sound. “To see it lovingly restored in 8K with remastered sound, frame by frame, is truly special. Knowing that so much care has gone into bringing it back for a new generation makes me incredibly happy. Thank you to everyone who has carried this film in your hearts. Looking forward to seeing it back on the big screen,” he added.
The official social media account of Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films replied to the post, saying, “Thank you for giving us a character and performance that continues to live on after 32 year.” Actor Mona Singh also described the film as a “classic.” Kapoor shared several rare behind-the-scenes photographs featuring himself and co-stars Manisha Koirala, Jackie Shroff, and Anupam Kher during the film’s production.
Manisha Koirala also marked the anniversary with an Instagram message celebrating the enduring themes of the film. “Thirty-two years ago, 1942: A Love Story found its way into our hearts. A timeless tale of love, hope, sacrifice, and patriotism, it continues to live on across generations,” she wrote, expressing enthusiasm about the upcoming re-release following the 8K restoration.
“Today, I’m deeply moved to see this classic lovingly restored in 8K, with its sound remastered in Dolby 5.1–bringing every emotion, every note, and every memory back to life. This restoration is a true labour of love, made possible by the remarkable teams at L’Immagine Ritrovata, Bologna, and Prasad Film Lab, Chennai, who painstakingly revived every frame with extraordinary care. I’m grateful that a new generation will experience 1942: A Love Story on the big screen, just as it was meant to be seen,” she added.
‘1942: A Love Story’ tells the story of Naren Singh (Anil Kapoor) and Rajjo Pathak (Manisha Koirala) set amid the social and political turbulence of India’s revolutionary movement in the 1940s. Kapoor portrayed Naren Singh, an apolitical son of a British colonial employee, while Koirala played Rajjo Pathak, the daughter of a freedom fighter. The film is also well remembered for its songs, including ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha To Aisa Laga’.
