Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has revealed that some of the pauses audiences associate with his acting were, at times, simply his attempts to remember forgotten lines.
Bachchan made the candid admission during the latest episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati 18, where he interacted with stand-up comedians Varun Grover, Gaurav Gupta and Gaurav Kapoor.
The conversation turned to comedy and acting after Grover praised Bachchan for his comic timing and the distinctive pauses he uses while delivering dialogues. Responding with his trademark humour and humility, Bachchan said those pauses were not always deliberate.
He explained that unlike performers who may develop material through observation and improvisation, film actors of his generation generally worked from written scripts. If he paused during a dialogue, he said, it could sometimes be because he had forgotten the line and was trying to recall it.
Bachchan also recalled the challenges of filmmaking during his early years in the industry, when film stock was an expensive resource and every take mattered.
He said actors had to remember their lines carefully because repeated takes meant greater use of costly film stock. According to Bachchan, if a scene did not work in the first take, it could create difficulties for the production.
The veteran actor further revealed how he would sometimes incorporate an unplanned pause into his performance rather than allowing the mistake to derail the shot. By turning the moment into part of his acting, he said, he would try to ensure that the director approved the take.
The discussion also touched upon comedy as an art form. Bachchan described comedy as an extremely difficult craft that requires performers to discover humour in ordinary situations and, at times, make themselves the subject of the joke.
His candid recollections offered a glimpse into the practical challenges actors faced during an earlier era of Indian cinema, when conserving film stock was an important part of the filmmaking process.
