Selvamalini, a domestic help in Madurai, found a bag containing Rs 17.4 lakh on the road. He honestly handed it over to the police. Police suspect hawala and are investigating the matter.
Madurai: A sack filled with Rs 17 lakh was found in the middle of the road. 46 year old Selvamalini of Simmakkal in Madurai informed the police after seeing this sack. On Monday, Selvamalini and her daughter were returning from a hotel when they saw this sack on the road. Domestic help Selvamalini said, “When we were returning home after packing food from the hotel, we saw a sack lying in the middle of the road. When a bike passed over it, a corner of the sack got torn and bundles of currency notes came out from it. We immediately handed it over to the police patrolling nearby.”
Vilakkuthoon police have registered the case. Police said that there were Rs 17,40,000 in the bag. Till now no one has come to claim this money. Police suspect that this could be hawala money. Police said the matter is being further investigated. Police are trying to identify the car by examining nearby CCTV footage.
Selvamalini said that she wants this money to be returned to its rightful owner. She also said that even though she herself was going through great financial crunch, she did not take even a single rupee because the money was not hers, and that is why she handed it over to the police.
