Amaravati officially declared the sole capital of AP; President Murmu signs law

Amaravati is declared as the official capital of Andhra Pradesh, as Centre issued Gazette notification, after the AP Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, was approved by President Droupadi Murmu, under Article 111, amending AP Reorganisation Act Section 5(2).

Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly passed a resolution on March 28 and the bill was amended by the Parliament after 260 minutes of debate in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on April 1, 2. It was passed by a voice vote and the capital status is effective from June 2, 2024.

Chandrababu Naidu: AP’s capital is Amaravati

In a post on social media platform X, Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu announced that the capital of AP is Amaravati.

“On behalf of my people of Andhra Pradesh, I express profound gratitude to Hon’ble President Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji for her gracious assent to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Act, 2026, fulfilling the long-cherished dream of our capital.”

He also thanked the Union Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his commitment to AP and all MPs who supported the Bill. “This is a victory for my people of Andhra Pradesh, especially my farmers of Amaravati.”
