Amalaki Ekadashi fasting story
Once upon a time there was a city named Vaidik. The name of the king of that city was Chaitrarath. He was very religious and kind. Everyone in his kingdom used to observe fast on Ekadashi. Once when Amalaki Ekadashi of Phalgun month came, the king organized a grand ceremony in a temple. In this ceremony, all the people of the city worshiped Lord Vishnu and also observed a fast.

All the people of the city kept vigil at night in the temple itself. A fowler also lived in that city. He was of very evil nature. He earned his family’s livelihood by killing animals and birds. With the desire to get Prasad, he also sat in the temple the whole night. In this way, he observed the fast of Amalaki Ekadashi unknowingly. After some time the groom died.
Due to the effect of fasting on Amalaki Ekadashi, Baheliya was born as a son of a king named Vidurath in the next life. Here he was named Vasuratha. Due to the influence of Ekadashi fast, his mind remained engaged in religious activities. One day when Vasurath went hunting he lost his way. Vasurath was surrounded by bandits and they started attacking him with weapons.
Seeing this Vasurath became unconscious. Then a divine goddess appeared from Vasuratha’s body and destroyed those bandits. When Vasurath regained consciousness, many thoughts came to his mind. Then a voice came from the sky, ‘O king, Lord Vishnu has protected you.’ After this, Vasurath had more faith in God and started fasting on Ekadashi date.
