Alfa Romeo Giulia alongside Stelvio to stay in production until 2027

New Delhi: Alfa Romeo have always made cars that have always widely divided opinion, and that is something that even the Giulia has created. For many, the Giulia is a car that overstayed, having been launched a decade ago, while others feel it has gotten better with age. The production of the Italian brand’s BMW 3-Series competition, the car is now going to stay in the Cassino plant production line until 2027.

Even though the Stelvio is going to stay in production until 2027, with the SUV riding on the same platform as the sedan, the Giorgio platform. The platform was, in fact, developed through a € 1 billion investment from the former FCA Group under late Sergio Marchionne’s leadership.

Why Alfa Romeo are retaining Giulia and Stelvio until 2027?

The reason for the Giulia and Stelvio staying back for a while is due to their replacements are being reworked to accommodate the combustion engines. Stellantis had previously planned to sell the second generation as just EVs in order to meet the brand’s target of going completely EV by 2027. However, this isn’t the target anymore due to a slower EV-adoption, something that has been concerning more and more brands more recently.

This means that the internal combustion engine will continue in the successors for both models. Alfa Romeo, though, needs more time to adapt to the STLA Large platform for the next-gen Giulia and Stelvio to fit ICE. Which means that the current lot isn’t going away despite having no electrification.

This decision was announced by CEO Santo Ficili during the presentation of the upgraded Tonale. When the replacements eventually do come to the market, the twin-turbo inline-six “Hurrican” engine from the platform-sharing Dodge Charger Sixpack could be one pack in the loop. Alfa Romeo, though, for the Quadrifoglio versions have hinted that they could use the Maserati V6.

In the Stellantis lineup, though, there are older models, and the Alfa duo don’t even come near some of the models. The Fiat Panda has been in the market since 2011, and the Dodge Durango was launched in 2010 and won’t be replaced until 2029. It is safe to say that what isn’t broken, doesn’t have to be changed is a motto that Stellantis can happily live by.
