Ajinkya Rahane’s Retirement Marks the End of an Era
Ajinkya Rahane, the former captain of the Indian Test team, has officially declared his retirement from all formats of cricket after a prolonged wait for a return to the national squad.
His last appearance in Test cricket was against the West Indies in July 2023, after which he fell out of favor with selectors who opted to focus on younger players.
Rahane’s retirement signifies the conclusion of a remarkable period in Indian Test cricket, characterized by resilient performances abroad. He leaves behind a legacy as one of the most reliable middle-order batsmen in the country, known for his ability to perform under pressure. Alongside Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli, Rahane was a cornerstone of India’s strong middle-order batting lineup, contributing to significant overseas victories, particularly in Australia, where they secured consecutive Border-Gavaskar Trophy titles.
With over 5,000 runs in Test cricket, Rahane was celebrated for his composed demeanor during tense moments. He notably led the team to a historic series win in Australia during the 2020-21 tour after Virat Kohli’s departure following the first Test.
Reflecting on a Challenging Journey
In the wake of his retirement, Rahane shared insights about the most challenging phase of his early international career, recalling the two years he spent as the 12th man before finally making his Test debut in 2013.
“During my initial two years with the team starting in 2011, I had to wait through 20 matches before I could debut. Being the 12th man for two years was tough, but it taught me valuable lessons. I had two options: seek sympathy or focus on self-improvement,” Rahane explained on his YouTube channel.
“There’s nothing wrong with being a 12th man or assisting teammates. I chose to view it positively. Observing others helped shape my attitude and mindset, allowing me to play for an extended period. While it might have been easy to seek sympathy, that was never my expectation,” he added.
The Significance of Patience in Rahane’s Career
Reflecting on his wait for a Test cap, Rahane emphasized how patience became a defining trait of his career, attributing it to his experiences on Mumbai’s local trains and in domestic cricket.
“Patience was always there, but it grew as I gained experience. I wouldn’t say I was inherently patient from the beginning. Traveling on Mumbai’s local trains is tough, and that’s where I learned patience,” the 38-year-old stated.
“As I progressed in domestic cricket and consistently scored runs, I naturally believed my name would come up for selection. However, after discussions with senior players, I realized that opportunities come at the right time. You can only control your efforts, and patience is crucial if you want a long career,” he concluded.
