In ancient times, there was a Chakravarti king named Harishchandra. He loved his subjects very much and protected him like a child. King Harishchandra was also famous for speaking the truth. Once due to some reason, he had to leave his kingdom and stay in the forest. Not only this, King Harishchandra sold his wife along with a son and became a servant of a Chandal himself.

Chandal gave him a place to stay at a crematorium and said that ‘whoever came here to burn his family, do not let him cremate him without taking money from him. In this way, many years passed to King Harishchandra while serving Chandal and living in the cremation ground. One day King Harishchandra was thinking about his salvation while sitting at the crematorium, when Gautam Rishi came there.
Seeing Gautam Rishi, King Harishchandra immediately took blessings from him and told his problem. After listening to King Harishchandra, Gautam Rishi said, ‘Aja Ekadashi, who welfare everyone in the Krishna Paksha of Bhadau month comes, you should fulfill his fast, it will give you welfare. Saying this, Gautam Rishi went away.
King Harishchandra fasted Aja Ekadashi by law. As soon as King Harishchandra completed this fast, flowers started raining from the sky. With the influence of this fast, King Harish Chandra got his family and the secret again and got a place in heaven after death. The story of this fast was narrated by Sri Krishna himself to Dharmaraja Yudhishthira.
