Match Report
After opting to bat first, West Indies faced an early blow in the third over at the team score of 24 runs, losing Ackeem Auguste off Taskin Ahmed. Auguste could score only 12 runs off 10 balls, with two fours. Following him, Brandon King and Alick Athanaze added 28 runs for the second wicket before the former was caught by Tanzid Hasan Sakib off Mustafizur Rahman on the fourth ball of the sixth over. He scored 31 runs off 22 balls, with four fours and a six. Furthermore, Athanaze added another 26-run partnership for the third wicket with skipper Shai Hope. It ended when Mahedi Hasan dismissed Athanaze at the individual score of 26 (21), with three fours and a six. His knock was followed by Hope’s 34-run knock off 25 balls, hitting three fours and two sixes. Later in the innings, Sherfane Rutherford scored a quick knock of 41 runs off 23 balls, with two fours and three sixes. On the back of these knocks, the Caribbean side managed to post 165/8 on the board in the allotted 20 overs. Mustafizur Rahman scalped three wickets for 26 runs in his four overs for Bangladesh, alongside two wickets each picked by Taskin Ahmed and Mahedi Hasan.
While chasing the target, the opening pair of Tanzid Hasan and skipper Litton Das stitched a partnership of 32 runs for the first wicket in 4.2 overs. Ramon Simmonds broke this partnership, dismissing Tanzid Hasan (19) in a caught-and-bowled on the second ball of the fifth over. Then came a match-winning and decisive partnership of 70 runs for the second wicket between Litton Das and Towhid Hridoy. Jason Holder gave a crucial breakthrough to the visitors, dismissing Das on the fourth ball of the 12th over. Before getting dismissed off Holder, Das had scored 47 runs off 35 balls, with five fours and a six. Furthermore, Towhid Hridy played a brilliant half-century knock of 54 (33), with six fours and two sixes, to help Bangladesh chase down the target comfortably in 19.1 overs, scoring 166/5. The veteran all-rounder Jason Holder scalped two wickets for 29 runs in four overs for the West Indies, alongside a wicket each picked by Romario Shepherd and Ramon Simmonds. But these efforts went in vain as the tourists couldn’t restrict Bangladesh before the target. With this win, Bangladesh have also taken a lead of 1-0 in the three-match series.
Player of the Match
Star Bangladesh batter Towhid Hridoy won the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his brilliant and match-winning knock of 54 runs off just 33 balls, with six fours and two sixes. Besides that, his partnership with skipper Litton Das also played a crucial role in Bangladesh’s five-wicket win in the first T20I against the West Indies.
