Ai Ogura Marks Strong Comeback with Impressive Fourth Place in Austrian MotoGP Sprint
Ai Ogura returned to MotoGP competition with a resolute performance at the Austrian Grand Prix Sprint on the Red Bull Ring, defying expectations and signaling his recovery from injury.
The SuperFile Trackhouse MotoGP Team rider had already hinted at his potential by securing third place in Friday’s practice session, setting a confident tone for the weekend.
“I feel very good. I couldn’t be happier,” Ogura stated after the Sprint. “We didn’t expect to finish in the top 10 today, so it was a good first day. I’m glad to see my hand is fine, I feel good on the bike, and I also have good speed. Fortunately, the injury area isn’t heavily stressed during the heavy braking here, so I’m lucky in that regard. I don’t even think about the injury when I’m on track, which is very positive. It was a good first day, and we’ll keep working for tomorrow. I’m not expecting anything particularly important this weekend. I just want to race, do things my way, and if that’s enough for a top 10 or even top 6 finish, I’ll be super happy because this is my comeback race after my injury.”
Ogura’s pragmatic approach, reflecting an acceptance of the slim chances for a title challenge, appears to have liberated his riding, enhancing rather than hindering his performance. After qualifying fifth in Q2, he maintained his position through the early laps of the 14-lap Sprint race. Despite being overtaken by Jorge Martin on lap four and Alex Marquez the following lap, Ogura consistently demonstrated his trademark strong second-half pace. He retook the Gresini rider on lap 11 and ultimately benefited from Pedro Acosta’s crash to secure a remarkable fourth place finish.
“This has been a good day,” Ogura commented. “In FP2, I was a bit worried because of the track conditions, but fortunately, they were good enough in Q2 to push like in qualifying. I’m happy to start from the second row, and in the Sprint race, I did what I had to do-I fought for my position and finished P4. Nothing more: it was a good qualifying and a good race.”
Now tied on points with Pedro Acosta and sitting fifth in the overall standings, Ogura prepares to transition from the Sprint’s “small pool” back into the demanding “big pool” of the full 28-lap Grand Prix race. His strong return at the Red Bull Ring underscores a promising resurgence as the championship battle intensifies.
