Why is Ahoi Ashtami fast observed?
In the month of Kartik, exactly four days after Karva Chauth, on the Ashtami of Kartik Krishna Paksha, Ahoi Mata fast is observed for the longevity of the child and freedom from all the obstacles in his life, which is known as Ahoi Ashtami fast.
What materials are required for the worship of Ahoi Ashtami?
The worship of Ahoi Ashtami includes offering of Ahoi Mata’s picture, makeup items, water urn, karva, lamp, cow ghee, incense sticks, roli, kalava, akshat (rice), dry flour (for making chowk), milk, flowers, fruits (like water chestnut) and sweets. Apart from this, a book of Ahoi Mata’s fast story is required.
How to worship Ahoi Ashtami?
- On the day of Ashtami, wake up early in the morning, take bath and wear clean clothes.
- Draw a picture of Ahoi Mata on the wall, in which porcupine and moon and stars are also made or install the picture of Mata.
- Then fill an earthen or copper urn with water and install it at the place of worship.
- Light a lamp near the Kalash, which should remain burning during the entire puja.
- Wishing for the long life of your children, take a pledge to observe Nirjala fast.
- Decorate Ahoi Mata with roli, kumkum, rice, turmeric, flower garland, incense sticks and lamps.
- Then offer fruits, sweets and puri to Ahoi Mata.
- After this listen or read the story of Ahoi Mata.
- At the end of the puja, perform Aarti of Ahoi Mata.
- In the evening, after looking at the stars, take some grains of wheat or rice in your hand and offer Arghya to them and offer water.
- Only after this, break your fast and consume fruits, sweets etc.
What things should not be done on the day of Ahoi Ashtami?
- On the day of Ahoi Ashtami, women should not do any kind of digging of soil.
- On the day of Ahoi Ashtami, one should eat only satvik food and stay away from tamasic food.
- Use copper or brass pot in the worship of Ahoi Ashtami, do not use steel pot.
- Things like knives or scissors should not be used on the day of Ahoi Ashtami.
How is the fast of Ahoi Ashtami broken?
The fast of Ahoi Ashtami is broken by gazing at the stars when the sun rises. In the evening, fasting mothers worship Ahoi Ashtami Mata, look at the stars and offer water to her. Only after this the fast is considered complete. According to religious beliefs, Arghya is offered to the stars through Karve.
