After Son, Muller becomes latest star to join MLS side

New Delhi: Germany and Bayern Munich legend Thomas Muller became the latest high-profile footballer to join a Major League Soccer side in Amercia.

The 2014 World Cup winner joined Vancouver Whitecaps in what is arguably the biggest signing of the club for the remainder of the season.

“Whitecaps — let’s make history,” Muller said in a video, after ending a 17-year stint with German giants Bayern for whom he scored 250 goals in 756 appearances across competitions.

“They (the fans) can expect that I’m always 100%. You can watch my skills in YouTube videos or several TV shows, but you can expect that I’m fully into it. And for me, that’s the most important part.”

He scored five times to help Germany win the World Cup in Brazil and scored five more in the 2010 edition in South Africa to win the Golden Boot.

The 35-year-old netted 45 goals in 131 matches for Germany before retiring from international football after the 2024 European Championship.

“Thomas is a natural leader whose passion for the game is infectious. This is a statement signing by our club and our ownership — a transformative moment for our club and our city,” Vancouver sporting director and CEO Axel Schuster said in statement.

‘What a city’

Los Angeles FC’s new signing Son Heung-min was unveiled on Wednesday, after a transfer fee of over $20 million, which is reportedly an MLS record.

“I’m here to win, and I will perform. I will definitely show you something exciting… are we calling it football or soccer? I will definitely show some exciting football, and we definitely will have success,” he said.

“What can I say? Dream come true. LA, what a city. I’m here to make this league even bigger, and I will do anything to make this club in a better position.”
