Pan India SIR Election Roll Cleanup: After Bihar Assembly Elections 2025, now the Election Commission (ECI) is going to start the first phase of voter list cleaning i.e. SIR (Special Intensive Revision) across the country. The Election Commission can make its official announcement next week. This time this special amendment process will start in about 10 to 15 states. This step is considered important in view of the elections to be held in 2026. Know which states the Election Commission can cover first and when will your state’s turn come?
Which states will be included in the first phase of SIR?
The Election Commission has given priority to those states in which elections are scheduled next year. The states that can be included in the initial phase include Assam, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala and West Bengal. Along with cleaning the voter list in these states, special attention will be given to the identification and verification of names of illegal immigrants. In states where local body elections are going to be held, the SIR process will be kept in later stages. The reason is that the ground level team is already busy in preparations for the local elections.
How was the SIR process in Bihar?
The SIR process has been completed before the assembly elections in Bihar. About 7.42 crore names were included in the final voter list. Bihar elections will be held in two phases on 6 and 11 November 2025 and counting of votes will take place on 14 November. The Election Commission has decided the roadmap of SIR by meeting with the Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of the states. Many states have made their voter lists prepared after the final SIR available on the website. The last SIR in Delhi was in 2008 and in Uttarakhand in 2006. Such a process is extremely important for matching old data and new voters.
What is the main objective of SIR?
- Identifying illegal immigrants and removing them from the voter list.
- Verification of place of birth of all voters.
- Bringing transparency in the electoral process and making correct voter list.
