Afghanistan Achieves Historic Sixth Place in ICC ODI Rankings

Afghanistan has made history by securing the sixth position in the ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings, surpassing Sri Lanka to reach their highest ranking ever in this format.

Since their ODI debut in 2009, Afghanistan has shown remarkable growth in international cricket, establishing themselves as a formidable competitor across various formats, according to the ICC.

Recent Achievements and Performance

Among their significant accomplishments are landmark victories against Pakistan and Sri Lanka during the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, along with their first semi-final appearance at the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Afghanistan has won 96 out of 191 ODI matches, achieving a commendable win-loss ratio of 1.09, which highlights their consistent improvement in the 50-over format.

Advancement in Cricket Formats

Afghanistan has now outperformed established cricketing nations like Bangladesh, England, and the West Indies, breaking into the top six of the ODI rankings for the first time. This ascent has been driven by a series of strong performances, including a 4-0 series victory against Ireland and an unbeaten run in the recent tri-series featuring Zimbabwe and Bangladesh.

Ongoing Success and Future Challenges

The team has maintained its winning streak in the T20 format, achieving a clean sweep of 3-0 against Zimbabwe. They secured this victory with a decisive seven-wicket win in the final match held in Sharjah on Sunday. Spinner Noor Ahmad was instrumental in this success, taking down Zimbabwe’s middle and lower order, leading to their dismissal for just 79 runs in under 15 overs. Afghanistan is now set to face Zimbabwe in a two-match Test series, aiming to extend their impressive performance in international cricket.
