Adivi Sesh Recalls Growing Up In US As Aamir Khan Fan: He Did Things That Will Smith Would Do

Adivi Sesh, who is awaiting the release of his movies Goodachari 2, better known as G2, and Dacoit: A Love Story, reveals how his Aamir Khan’s body of work has had a deep impact on the way he consumes cinema.

The Telugu actor-writer known for playing the character of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan in 2022 film Major, has also featured in HIT: The Second Case. He was raised in the US, and looks back at growing up on watching Indian films, especially Aamir’s work.

Aamir Khan’s influence on Adivi while growing up in US

In an interview with Pinkvilla, Adivi said, “Aamir Khan did things that a Will Smith would do.” While he agreed that an Indian actor in Hollywood got restricted to supporting roles or brown characters, Aamir’s filmography was always different for him.

“I’ve watched the entire Aamir Khan filmography while growing up. Range De Basanti, Lagaan, Ghulam… when he gives the speech “Papa bure nahi the, bas kamzor the…” it just stayed with me. It made me realise that elders in our families can also have weaknesses. I didn’t like Fanaa a lot, though I loved the music. Just for the songs, I saw it 5-6 times in the US,” he shared.

Dil Chahta Hai changed how he perceived cinema

Stating how Dil Chahta Hai “completely changed what I perceived cinema,” Adivi added, “I didn’t realise people can be this cool. That film was cool even for an American kid. All the girls were watching Shah Rukh Khan films, and all the boys were listening to Punjabi music. And I was watching Aamir Khan movies. I was in my own world.”

Revealing how the moment was when he finally got to meet Aamir, Adivi recalls, “I finally met him at the Laapataa Ladies premiere. It was an extraordinary moment for me. I haven’t told him, how much he has influenced my approach to films and life. It was interesting to listen to his stories that have inspired me.”

Ever since Adivi Sesh started writing films with Kshanam (2016), he found success. His subsequent films like Goodachari, Evaru and Major became blockbusters.
