Religious importance of Adhik Maas: According to the Hindu calendar, the year 2026 is going to be a special year. This year an additional month will be added to the calendar, which we know as Adhikamas or ‘Purushottam Maas’. In Sanatan Dharma, this month is considered the center of spiritual energy. But have you ever wondered why this month that comes every three years is so special and why in the Puranas it was called ‘Purushottam Maas’ instead of ‘Malmas’? Let us know.
Why does Adhikamaas come?
The Hindu calendar is based on the calculations of the Sun and the Moon.
lunar year: It is of 354 days.
Solar year: There are 365 days and approximately 6 hours.
There is a difference of about 11 days every year between these two. In three years this difference becomes about one month (33 days). To bridge this gap and maintain the balance of the seasons, every third year an additional month is added to the calendar, which is called Adhikamas. According to belief, during this period, pilgrimage and bathing in holy rivers free one from the sins of many births.
Story of Puranas, journey from Malmas to becoming Purushottam month
According to mythology, Adhikamas was initially called ‘Malmas’ and was considered taboo for auspicious works. For this reason, no god was ready to become the ruler of this month. Saddened by his neglect, this month went to Lord Vishnu. Then Lord Vishnu gave it its name ‘Purushottam’ and gave the boon that whoever worships me in this month will receive many times more virtue than in other months. Since then this month came to be called Purushottam month and it became very dear to Lord Vishnu.
Religious importance and benefits of Adhikamas
Attainment of virtue: It is believed that one day’s worship done in Adhikamas gives results equal to 100 days of normal days.
Removal of defects: During this period, fasting and self-reflection reduce the defects of the horoscope and mental stress.
Vishnu’s grace: Since it is the month of Lord Vishnu, chanting the mantra ‘Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevaya’ is considered to provide salvation.
