The Garuda Purana, one of the major religious texts of Hinduism, describes in detail the fate and punishment of the soul after death. It says that a person who commits sin in his life is sent to hell after death.
According to Garuda Purana there are 36 types of hells, where the soul is subjected to various terrible tortures according to its sins.

Tamisra hell: Those who cheat for wife or money are cast into darkness.
Andhatamishra hell: People who have relations with other women or men are tortured by keeping them hungry and thirsty.

Maharaurava Naraka: Those who eat after burning others, are burnt in fire.
Crow Hell: Tyrants are torn to pieces by crows and owls.

It is also said in Garuda Purana that man not only has to endure the pain of hell, but he also has to take birth again and again in 84 lakh species – such as animals, birds, insects, aquatic creatures, plants etc. This birth is also considered a kind of punishment for the soul.
